Quan Thanh temple is officially known with the name “Tran Vu Quan” that was dedicated ‘Huyen Thien Tran Vu”- the deity defending the north. The temple located on the corner of Quan Thanh Street and Thanh Nien Street. The temple was built by King Ly Thai To and renovated several times. Firstly, it located in the south of To Lich River. After moving the capital from Hoa Lu to Thang Long, King Ly Cong Uan moved the temple to its present position.

Right from the gate, you will be impressed by four pillars decorated with phoenix standing in two sides and flanked by ancient screens. Around the pillars are prominent red couplets. The main features of Quan Thanh Temple are large yard shaded by a banyan tree and the shrine. With extremely unique wood carvings inside the harmonious space, the architecture of the temple has extremely high artistic and aesthetic value.

The most outstanding features in Quan Thanh Temple is that the statue of Huyen Thien Tran Vu was mould in black bronze with four-meter high and weighs about 4 tons on a marble height of over 1m.

According to the legend, Huyen Thien Tran Vu was the deity who fight foreign invaders helping Thang Long people to eliminate malevolent spirits and govern the North. The statue has a square face with straight eyes holding a snake and tortoise. Considered as a masterpiece of Vietnamese bronze casting and sculpture, this artwork is evidence of the advanced technical standard of bronze casting and sculpture of Vietnamese artisans in the 17th century. 

At the beginning of every month or New Year, people come to Quan Thanh Temple to worship and pray for health, luck and happiness. Legend has it that if you use the right hand to rub the left leg of the statue of Huyen Thien Tran Vu, the rubber will get much luck and smoothly.
